?A Chinese man is suing the Huazhong University of Science and Technology over the death of his son, Zheng Gang. Zheng Gang died at a sperm donation bank owned and operated by the university. The university claims that it is not in any way responsible for the man’s death. They have classified the incident as an accidental death although they did pay out a claim of 80,000 yen to the family around the time of the student’s death at the sperm bank.
The university says that the payment made to the medical student’s family was for “humanitarian aid”, and that the payment was part of a binding agreement not to ask for more money. Records show that the university also agreed to reduce the tuition of Zheng Gang’s widow who is also a medical student at the University.
Zheng Gang’s father claims that his 35-year-old son had recently undergone a physical exam where he was given a clean bill of health. He had asked that an autopsy be performed on his son’s body, but the university refused to allow the autopsy. Instead, Gang’s body was cremated just a few days after his death. Details about the event are scarce, with local police listing the incident as a sudden death. Zheng apparently died just before entering the sperm collection room. The university claims that “overseas forces” prevent them from revealing more details about how and why Zheng Gang died. Gang had previously donated at the sperm bank without incident.
Gang’s father has filed a lawsuit before the Wuhan Hongshan District People’s Court, and he is asking for approximately $600,000 dollars to be paid in compensation. The case will be heard later by the court.
